Thyon : The tranquil corner of the 4 Valleys.

Trendiness hasn’t quite caught up to this sunny holiday resort that forms the eastern gateway to the magnificent 4 Valleys region. With small traditional villages and rustic farm houses dotting its majestic mountain landscape, Thyon-Les Collons invites relaxation perhaps even more than its modern counterparts in the area.

Perched at an altitude of 1500 – 2100 meters, Thyon is ideally situated for winter sports. The resort offers stunning views of the Bernese, Valais and Vaud Alps, dominated by the 4000 meter peaks of the Matterhorn and Dent Blanche. It is connected by over 90 lifts to the more than 400 km of ski runs that surround it and additionally boasts a snow park, night skiing, 10 km of winter hiking trails, a sleigh-run and more for the winter sports enthusiast. Restrictive traffic regulations in the area (Thyon 2000, in particular, is traffic free) make it an ideal destination for visiting families.

 

Summer visitors to the area will enjoy the fresh Alpine air, extensive hiking and mountain biking trails and peaceful, starlit evenings. Excursions to the Valais capital of Sion and the Rhone valley wine region of Sierre/Salgesch are within easy reach. And the “Bisse de Vex”, a man made irrigation channel dating from the 15^th century, offers delightful walks with idyllic scenery.

     

Also not to be missed are the pyramids of Euseigne in the nearby village of Euseigne - unusual rock formations created by natural erosion. And daily guided tours are available of the Grande Dixence dam in the Val d'Hérémence - at 285 meters, the highest dam in the world.

 

Dining and après ski options in the area include many choice cafes, restaurants, bars and evening entertainment venues.  

Thyon-Les Collons is approximately two hours drive from Geneva airport, and a 30 minute drive from Sion, the capital of Valais. From the airport, you can rent a car (www.carhiresearch.co.uk/loc/Switzerland/Geneva-Airport.html) or for about £40, take a train from the airport to Sion, where a bus service runs several times daily from the station to Thyon.
